Teach Your Dog to High Five!

It's National High Five Day, so today is the day to get some canine high five action. Not sure how to teach your pooch this gnarly trick? This one might be easier than teaching your pup to sit, so let's get started!

Step 1:

Get your training treats ready and have your dog sit. Put a treat in one hand, make a fist, and put it near your dog's face.

Step 2:

Your clever dog will sniff at it and try to figure out how to get the treat. As soon as your dog tries to paw your hand, praise and give a treat. Do this over and over again until your pup regularly uses his/her paw to get the treat.

Step 3:

Continue using your fist to lure your dog into high fiving you, but now start giving the treat from the other hand, not the treat in the fist. Work on getting your dog to high five your fist without any treat in the fist. Start using the command "high five" every time your dog high fives your fist.

Step 4:

Slowly make your fist less fist-like with each repetition. The goal here is to slowly get your hand flat.

Depending on breed and disposition (and how often you practice), your dog should be high fiving you in no time! Many dogs can master this trick in one session. Have fun and high five bro!
